HUNTER SAFETY REQUIREMENT

A person born on or after June 1, 1975 may not be issued a license to take or attempt to take wild animal life in this state with the use of a firearm, gun (including a muzzleloading gun), bow or crossbow without first having successfully completed a hunter safety course. A valid hunter safety certification card must be presented prior to issuing a license which includes a hunting privilege (excluding lifetime licenses) for anyone who meets the above requirement. Individuals exempted from purchasing a hunting license but born on or after June 1, 1975 are exempted from the hunter safety requirement. Lifetime license holders born on or after June 1, 1975 whose licenses do not indicate on the face of the licenses that a hunter safety course has been completed must have in their possession the hunter safety certification card while taking or attempting to take wild animal life.

HUNTER SAFETY REQUIREMENT DEFERRAL
Effective Aug. 1, 2006, anyone 16 years or older and born after May 31, 1975 can hunt under the supervision of a licensed hunter, 21 or older, without having to complete the state's hunter safety certification. For more information see MyFWC.com/huntered/HuntMentorException.htm.

Juvenile Hunters:
In the state of Florida, children 15 and younger may hunt without a hunting license as long as they are accompanied by an adult (18 years or older) . Children under 16 years of age can carry a gun and get their own bag limit, but must be under adult supervision at all times. Until you reach 16 years of age, you must hunt with an adult (even when bow hunting).

A hunting license is required in Florida at age 16. Children must first complete a hunter safety course to get a license, except that under the newly established “Hunter Safety Mentoring Exemption” a person who hunts under the supervision of a licensed hunter, 21 or older, may purchase their first Florida hunting license and hunt until the expiration of that license, without having to complete the state’s hunter safety certification. Individuals taking advantage of this one-time-only mentoring exemption would have to take and pass a hunter safety class to be eligible to purchase another hunting license. If you will reach the age of 16 during the hunting season, you should have already completed the hunter safety course and purchased a license.

What are the regulations for hunting hogs on privately owned land?

On private lands, wild hogs are considered domestic livestock and are the property of the landowner upon whose land they occur. There is no closed season, bag limit, or size limit for wild hogs taken on private property.  They may be taken:

  • Year-round between one half hour before sunrise until one half hour after sunset
  • By legal means (using legal weapons, dogs, trapping, etc.)
  • With landowner permission only

Using a gun, bow, or crossbow and a light at night without obtaining a Gun and Light at Night Permit is a prohibited method of taking hogs. The is permit is only given out when hogs are destroying property.

Click Here for information about the Gun and Light at Night Permit.

A hunting license is not needed when hunting wild hogs on private lands.
